The Hackett Group's latest SolutionMap evaluates 122 procurement technology providers across 16 source-to-pay categories.

That number is more than an analyst-report detail. It captures the buying problem facing procurement leaders: the market has become too crowded and overlapping for a traditional feature comparison to produce a sensible shortlist.

More vendors are crossing category boundaries

The Fall 2026 assessment adds six providers: Anvil Analytical, IntelAgree, Softco, Suppeco, Synertrade and Vertice.

Four existing providers also expanded into additional categories. Mercanis now appears across accounts payable, e-procurement, procure-to-pay and source-to-pay. Scanmarket by Unit4 expanded into sourcing, source-to-contract, spend analytics and supplier management. Spendflo and ISPNext also widened their coverage.

This movement matters more than an individual ranking. Point solutions are expanding into platforms, suites are adding orchestration, and AI products are presenting themselves as a new execution layer across several established categories.

Five hundred capability questions can still produce the wrong answer

Hackett says the assessment uses more than 500 functional and capability criteria, mandatory demonstrations and verified customer-value ratings.

That rigour is useful, but buyers still need to decide what they are actually selecting.

A platform can score strongly across many functions and remain the wrong architectural choice if the organisation needs a neutral orchestration layer, a specialist direct-material capability or an autonomous execution product. Conversely, a narrow tool can outperform on one workflow while creating another integration and data-management burden.

The shortlist should begin with the operating model:

  • Which system owns supplier, contract and transaction records?

  • Where should intake and cross-functional orchestration sit?

  • Which work should agents execute rather than recommend?

  • Which controls must remain independent of the transactional suite?

  • What capability is genuinely differentiating rather than merely available?

AI makes category labels less reliable

A sourcing agent may perform intake, supplier discovery, event creation, negotiation and award analysis. A risk platform may orchestrate approvals across procurement, security and legal. A CLM system may initiate procurement actions from contract obligations.

That does not mean every platform is now equivalent. It means buyers must evaluate the completed outcome, authority and evidence trail rather than accepting the vendor's preferred category.

The bottom line

Market coverage has never been better. Buyer clarity has rarely been more important.

If 122 vendors can plausibly enter the assessment, your first procurement-tech decision is not which vendor to demo. It is which layer of the operating model you are actually trying to buy.
